Pineapple
Ananas comosus
Bromeliaceae, the Bromeliad family
Native to South America |
Pineapple contains bromelain, which digests proteins and fights inflammation. Bromelain can help heal bruises and swelling, and it inhibits cancer. People often drink pineapple juice to relieve sports injuries and stomach problems. However, it is not clear how well that works because there is not very much bromelain in the fruit. Pineapple leaves may reduce blood lipids and blood sugar.
Want to grow your own pineapple? A properly prepared pineapple top can sprout roots in a glass of water.
